Ever since France replaced the antiquated FAMAS as their main rifle for the French Army in 2016, they’ve been making a number of upgrades to their armaments and equipment. To outfit their recently-purchased Heckler & Koch HK416Fs, the French government tasked HK France SAS with supplying them with the Aimpoint CompM5. Designed to work with the Aimpoint 3XMag-1 and 6xMag-1 magnifiers, these optics will be issued to French Army units over the next six years, until the order of 120,000 units is completed. It’s expected that 93,000 HK416F rifles will be fitted from now until the year 2028.

The Aimpoint CompM5 is a new model which Aimpoint introduced just last September (TheFirearmBlog.com/blog/2017/09/21/aimpoint-officially-introduces-compm5-sight/).

The Aimpoint CompM5 is a basic, red-dot non-magnifying optic powered by a single AAA battery. It’s the most compact model of Aimpoint’s Comp series of sights and weighs a paltry 5 ounces. The aiming dot is rated at 2 MOA and is compatible with most night vision equipment. It has four Night Vision and 6 daylight settings. The red dot can be powered for up to 5 years on “position 7”, one of its daylight settings, or more than 10 years on any of the Night Vision settings. Lithium or Alkaline batteries are compatible with the unit.

French soldiers like this one won’t have to content themselves with iron sights for much longer, now that 120,000 Aimpoint CompM5 optics have been ordered
(TheFirearmBlog.com/blog/2017/05/09/first-orders-aif-hk416f-rifles-delivered-french-army/).

Designed specifically with the professional user in mind, Aimpoint stipulates that the CompM5 can operate in temperatures ranging from -49° F to 160° F, is submersible to depths of up to 45 meters, is shock, vibration and chemical-resistant. Although the order quantity of optics is well over the number of HK416F rifles to be fitted, it’s believed that more rifles will be purchased over the years. The French Army still has about 400,000 FAMAS rifles, and they will likely re-use their 4x optic, the Scrome J4. Some of the ordered Aimpoint optics will also likely be used on the existing FAMAS rifles, which will remain as the main battle rifle of the French National Guard.

The CompM5 is the latest model of Aimpoint’s Comp series of optics, and is said to be the most durable of the lineup (TheFirearmBlog.com/blog/2018/07/25/france-selects-aimpoint-comp5-for-hk416f/).

In a press release issued by Heckler & Koch dated 19 July, the announcement on the French Army’s adoption of the Aimpoint CompM5 states:

“The French Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) has awarded on the 17th of July 2018 to the consortium Heckler & Koch France SAS / Aimpoint AB an important contract for the supply of red dot sights for the new HK416 F French assault rifle. The contract covers the supply of up to 120,000 CompM5 sights over a period of six years. The CompM5 sight is the latest offering of the originator and worldwide leader in reflex sighting technology Aimpoint AB. Compact, lightweight and rugged, it will further increase the capabilities of the French soldier equipped with the new HK416 F assault rifle.”
